Skips Permits

If you’ve already decided that you want to hire a skip and have got a size in mind, the next thing you probably want to know more about is skip permits. They aren’t always a requirement, but it’s useful to know what they are, when you need them and what they’re likely to cost in your specific London borough.

What is a skip permit?

A skip permit – sometimes referred to as a skip licence – is essentially permission from your local borough council to have a skip on a public highway. This helps them to control the number of skips in certain areas at any time, reducing the impact on traffic and parking in your neighbourhood.

When do you need a skip permit?

A skip permit is required if you can’t find space to have a skip on your private land, such as a driveway or garden. If your only option is to have the skip placed on a public highway, you’ll need a permit (note: not all roads are public highways so be sure to check this first). This is a common scenario in London, where space is at a premium and many properties are terraced houses without driveways and front lawns.

How much is a skip permit in London?

With so many different boroughs, skip permit costs vary across the region and you may be unsure about who has to apply for the permit. We charge a £10 admin fee in addition to any fees applied by your borough. You can see more details on your specific borough or location below.
