Garden Waste Skip: Dos & Don’ts
Summer is here again and it’s always the perfect time of year to get stuck into the garden. With more daylight hours and less chance of the work being cancelled due to rain, it’s easy to understand why there is an increased demand for garden waste skips during this period.
Whether you’re only thinking about giving your garden a tidy or you’ve got some big plans you’d like to get underway with redesigning the space, there is always plenty of waste produced as a result of work in the garden. Often, it can end up being a surprising amount of waste, which is why we always recommend planning ahead with skip hire.
To help you tackle your garden waste this summer, we’ve got a few dos and don’ts to consider. From picking a skip size – and what can go in it – to how to load it safely, we’re here to help you get the most from a garden waste skip.
What size skip do I need for garden clearance?
The first thing to consider is your choice of skip size for your garden waste. You should think about the work you’re going to tackle and try to estimate as best as possible how much waste you’ll generate. For example, are you trimming the lawn, hedges and trees around your property? Or are you taking down that old shed, replacing fencing and digging out a new pond?
At Reston Waste, we offer a variety of skip sizes to help meet the needs of almost any garden project. From smaller skips to hold waste where you’re simplifying sprucing things up to bigger skips where you can get rid of brickwork and earth as well. And for when a skip won’t fit on your land or you’re not permitted to have one outside your property, we can offer waste removal services.
Check out our full range of skip sizes for your next garden project:
- 4-yard skip
- 6-yard skip
- 8-yard skip
- 10-yard skip
- 12-yard skip
- 14-yard skip
If you need more details on our skips and their capacity, please see our skip sizes page or call us for advice.
What can you put in a green waste skip?
All our skips accept garden waste here at Reston Waste, but it’s important to know that there are some accepted and some restricted waste types when it comes to our skips.
All of the typical garden waste items such as wood, concrete, soil, trimmings and even glass are accepted in our green waste skips. However, if you have any chemical and liquid waste – from items stored in your shed for example – you will need to find a dedicated collection or disposal service.
We do collect tree trunks up to a certain diameter, but if they are too large we will be unable to accept them, so please contact us for more details on this. We also accept tarmac but at an additional cost of £50 per ton.
If you have an item you know you want to get rid of but you’re unsure if it’s accepted in our skips, just ask when you’re hiring your skip and we’ll be happy to advise.
Proper loading for your garden waste skip
Overloading your garden waste skip could mean you end up with a fine, but it’s also a hazard for anyone on, or close to, your property. This is because items will no doubt exceed the fill line, stick out from the side and create the potential for waste to cascade out.
We’ve covered this in more detail in a previous post which you can read here, however, there are four main ways to maximise space safely in your skip:
-
Put flat items, such as fence panels, in the bottom of the skip first
-
Tessellate all other items on top of this layer next
-
Deconstruct bulky items as much as possible and tessellate those
-
Finally, fill any gaps with debris items to fill the voids
These steps will help you to safely load your skip, but please note that the fill line should not be exceeded and that our skips come with maximum load capacities (these can be found on our skip sizes page). All of our skips must be filled to a level load for collection.
